July 15, 2021 – Segway-Ninebot, a global leader in shared micro-mobility, announced that its latest electric bike Urban A200 was granted the UL 2849 certificate, the first such certificate issued to shared e-bikes by Underwriters Laboratories Inc (UL). UL 2849 is the electric system safety certification for e-bikes developed by UL, a global independent safety certification company headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois.
Urban A200’s UL 2849 certification signals Segway-Ninebot’s ambition to grow its shared micro-mobility solutions in North America and other western markets. As the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)’s expected standard for electric system safety, UL 2849 certification is a key safety milestone for e-bike manufacturers who wish to enter the US market.
“Receiving the world’s first UL 2849 certificate issued by UL granted to shared e-bikes means that Segway-Ninebot’s e-bike products are now equipped with a passport for entering overseas markets”, said Alan Zhao, General Manager of Sharing Business Division at Segway-Ninebot at the UL presentation ceremony. “The certification signifies our commitment to product safety and the safety of our customers. It is an opportunity for us to introduce our shared e-bike solutions to international markets, and we look forward to contributing to the sustainable development of the global smart micro-mobility industry”.
The UL 2849 certification is not the first time that Segway-Ninebot received international recognition for product quality. As early as 2019, scooters designed and manufactured by Segway-Ninebot were granted the world’s first ABE certificates, which are necessary for entering the German market.
“In today’s sharing economy, Segway-Ninebot is a high-tech company that has been introducing high quality, reliable products to the market thanks to its smart mobile capabilities,” said Liu Jingying, general manager of UL’s consumer electronics and healthcare division for China and Hong Kong. “The certification of UL 2849 is an important milestone in UL’s partnership with Segway-Ninebot. At the same time, UL is looking forward to helping more products and industry partners stand out in the global competition through our continuous efforts and professional services”.
E-bikes are a popular choice for shared micro-mobility – and their safety is crucial to consumers. The UL 2849 certification process assesses a wide range of aspects of the electrical system of e-bikes, ranging from battery management systems to controllers, chargers, and sockets.
In addition to safety features, the Urban A200 series also offers a low-maintenance design and intelligent features such as a smart dashboard and built-in IoT. Globa micro-mobility operators such as Spin, Tier, and Dott have all expressed interest in Urban A200, which may soon be deployed in cities across North America and Europe.
